AFCON 2017 Qualifiers: Burundi Secure First Win with 2-0 Victory Over Niger
Burundi bounced back in style on Saturday to revive their Africa Cup of Nations 2017 qualification hopes with a convincing 2-0 win over Niger in Bujumbura on Matchday 2 of the Group K campaign.
After a narrow opening-day defeat to Senegal, the Intamba mu Rugamba responded positively in front of their home supporters. Star forward Fiston Abdul Razak gave the hosts an early lead in the 21st minute, capitalising on defensive hesitation to slot home the opener and give Burundi a crucial advantage.
From there, Ahcene Aït-Abdelmalek’s side managed the game with composure and discipline, resisting any serious threat from François Zahoui’s Niger team.
As the match wore on, Burundi’s control paid dividends. With seven minutes remaining, experienced midfielder Papy Faty sealed the victory, scoring in the 83rd minute to double the lead and put the result beyond doubt.
The win marks Burundi’s first three points in Group K, bringing them level with Niger after two rounds. It also keeps alive their ambitions of qualifying for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, with several rounds still to play.
Senegal currently top the group following back-to-back wins, but Burundi’s triumph ensures that the race for second place—and potentially a best runner-up spot—remains open.
