AFCON 2015 – DR Congo Ready for Zambia in Group B Opener
DR Congo kicks off its 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign this Sunday with a highly anticipated clash against Zambia, marking the opening match of Group B.
The Leopards, crowned African champions in 1968 (1-0 win over Ghana) and 1974 (after two finals against Zambia: 2-2 and then 2-0), are making their 17th appearance in the competition. They enter the tournament with renewed ambition and a desire to restore the reputation of Congolese football, tarnished by a disappointing group-stage exit in 2013, which saw them finish with three draws.
Now led by Florent Ibenge, the Leopards rely on a younger generation of players determined to turn the tide. At the heart of this squad is striker Dieumerci Mbokani, who already proved his form by scoring the equalizer in a recent friendly against Cameroon.
Together with assistant Jean-Claude Mukanya, Ibenge has carefully studied Zambia’s tactical approach in preparation for the encounter.
Kick-off for this exciting Group B match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. GMT. A strong start could be vital for either side in a competitive group that also includes Tunisia and Cape Verde.
