AFCON 2015 – Mali’s Yacouba Sylla: “We Know What’s at Stake” Ahead of Decisive Guinea Showdown
Mali face a critical test tonight in Group D of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations as they take on Guinea in what promises to be a nerve-wracking battle for a spot in the quarter-finals. With both teams on two points, a win is the only sure path forward in a group where all four teams are level on points.
Despite leading in both of their previous games, Mali only managed draws against Cameroon and Ivory Coast, a situation that has left them vulnerable heading into this final round.
Midfielder Yacouba Sylla is aware of what’s at stake. Speaking to Football365, he acknowledged both the importance of the match and the quality of their opponent:
“We prepared for it like any other match, even though we know in the back of our minds that this match will perhaps be the last of the CAN for one of the two teams. We maintain the serenity we’ve had since the start.”
“As for our opponent, no one expected them to be at this level. They’re a good team that plays well on the ball. If they’re where they are, it’s not by chance. They’re undefeated like us.”
Sylla emphasized positive pressure, not panic:
“We will go onto the pitch with the desire to win because we know that after this match, if we don’t win, it could be over. It’s crucial, therefore. It’s nothing but positive pressure.”
With Guinea also unbeaten and surprising many with their solid performances, the match promises high intensity and emotion. Mali’s recent history may offer some comfort — they defeated Guinea in the last two AFCONs — but as Sylla said, “the truth will be on the pitch.”
One thing is certain: the Eagles must fly tonight, or risk an early return home.
