AFCON 2015 – Algeria Breaks 25-Year Curse with Dramatic Win Over South Africa
Algeria has finally done it. For the first time since 1990, the Fennecs have won their opening match in the Africa Cup of Nations, defeating South Africa 3-1 in a thrilling comeback performance on Monday night.
Despite being touted as one of the tournament favorites, Algeria had to dig deep. After conceding the opening goal and nearly falling 2-0 behind when Tokelo Rantie missed a penalty (striking the crossbar), Christian Gourcuff’s men found new life.
Algeria’s response came swiftly:
A South African own goal brought the Fennecs level.
Then Faouzi Ghoulam smashed in a stunning effort to make it 2-1.
Islam Slimani sealed the victory with a composed finish following a mistake from goalkeeper Darren Keet, who misjudged the ball under pressure.
This win not only puts Algeria top of Group C on goal difference, ahead of Senegal who beat Ghana 2-1, but also sends a strong message that the Fennecs are indeed serious title contenders.
A long-awaited victory, 25 years in the making, and a perfect start for Algeria.
