AFCON 2015: ALGERIA FACE MUST-WIN FINAL AGAINST SENEGAL
Algeria’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations took a major blow after a last-gasp defeat to Ghana. The Fennecs fell 1-0 to the Black Stars, conceding in added time to Asamoah Gyan, and now face a decisive clash with Senegal in the final round of Group C.
Speaking after the game, Sofiane Feghouli acknowledged the challenge ahead:
“In fact, we knew there would be three finals before the competition began and that whoever was best able to adapt to the playing conditions—namely the climate and this very, very difficult pitch—would be able to advance.”
Feghouli pointed to the poor pitch quality as a factor that hindered Algeria’s usual style of play:
“This pitch really hindered us in imposing our game. Finally, we were able to adapt for 90 minutes, but on a harmless ball, a loss of concentration on our part, they scored. Congratulations to them, but as I already said, it’s not over and we’ll give everything to win the last match.”
Algeria now face Senegal, who lead the group with 4 points, in what will effectively be a final for both teams. Only a win will guarantee progression for Christian Gourcuff’s side.
