AFCON 2015 Qualifiers – Mali vs Algeria: Sigamary Diarra Rallies Eagles Ahead of Decisive Clash
As the curtain falls on the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Mali faces a high-stakes encounter this Wednesday against group leaders Algeria in Bamako. For Sigamary Diarra and his teammates, the equation is simple: victory is mandatory to secure a spot in Equatorial Guinea without depending on results elsewhere.
“We’re expecting a very tough match against an Algerian team that’s full of confidence and will try to pull off a good performance against us,” said the Malian midfielder. “We have to win to avoid any guesswork and secure our qualification.”
Mali currently trails behind Algeria and Malawi in the group. While Algeria has already qualified, Mali’s chances hinge on achieving a better result than Malawi, who play Ethiopia.
Redemption Mission
Still reeling from earlier disappointments—notably a shock defeat to Ethiopia and a painful loss to Malawi—the Eagles are determined to reverse their course and avoid missing out on their sixth consecutive AFCON appearance since 2008.
“That said, we know that to win, we have to surpass ourselves. Algeria won’t give us any gifts—we’re aware of that,” Diarra added. “The team is mobilized and we’ll give everything to bring happiness to our people.”
With Algeria coming in as the highest-performing side in the group, Mali’s challenge is steep. But with home support, national pride, and qualification on the line, the Eagles have no choice but to take flight.
Kickoff is scheduled for Wednesday evening, with both Mali and Malawi’s matches set to begin simultaneously.
