CAN 2015 – Asamoah Gyan Doubtful for Ghana’s Opener Against Senegal
Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan missed Friday’s training session and, despite expectations that he would resume full training, his participation in the Black Stars’ opening match against Senegal remains uncertain.
Speaking to Le Buteur, Gyan explained:
“To tell the truth, I have a small injury. However, I don’t know if I’ll be fully ready for Monday’s match against Senegal. We’ll see.”
Ghana faces the Lions of Teranga on Monday to kick off their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign. However, the team heads into the tournament far from their best form, and missing their talismanic striker for the opening game would be a major setback. Opening matches are crucial in a tournament like the AFCON, where early momentum can define a team’s trajectory.
At 29 years old, this will be Gyan’s fifth AFCON appearance. Despite his experience and consistent goal-scoring record, the trophy has always eluded him. Gyan is Ghana’s top scorer, with 42 goals in 82 appearances, and remains the team’s most important offensive asset.
If he is ruled out, Ghana will need others to step up in what promises to be a fiercely competitive Group C, which also includes Algeria and South Africa.
