Senegal’s Kouyaté: “We Must Qualify — No Matter What” Ahead of Decisive Egypt Clash
As Senegal prepares for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Egypt, midfielder Cheikhou Kouyaté has underlined the significance of the fixture, describing it as a must-win if the Lions of Teranga hope to secure their place at the 2015 tournament in Morocco.
Currently sitting second in their qualifying group with seven points—three behind leaders Tunisia and just one ahead of Egypt—Senegal knows that a positive result in Cairo is essential to keep their qualification hopes alive.
“It’s a very difficult match that awaits us,” said Kouyaté, speaking to the English press. “But no matter what, we must give everything—for ourselves, for our people. It is important to qualify, and we must qualify at all costs. It is impossible that we do not qualify.”
The 24-year-old West Ham United midfielder, who recently returned from injury, is expected to be named in Alain Giresse’s squad for the decisive tie. His presence brings experience and composure to a side that will need to be at its best in front of a partisan Cairo crowd.
“If we win it, we qualify. If not, we will be in a very difficult position,” Kouyaté added, highlighting the high stakes involved.
Senegal’s qualifying campaign has been strong, but with Egypt resurgent and desperate to return to the continental stage after missing recent tournaments, the Cairo showdown promises to be one of the most intense fixtures in this qualification phase.
While Kouyaté is back in contention, forward Demba Ba will not be part of the traveling squad. Coach Alain Giresse has instead called up in-form West Ham striker Diafra Sakho, who replaces Ba in the attack.
With a squad rich in European-based talent—featuring names such as Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé, and Idrissa Gueye—Senegal remains a strong contender. But the outcome in Cairo could determine whether they participate in Africa’s biggest football celebration or miss out on the finals altogether.
The message from Kouyaté is clear: for Senegal, failure to qualify is not an option.
