Mali Target Strong Start in Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers Against Malawi
Mali’s national team is gearing up to kick off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a crucial home fixture against Malawi this Saturday. Ahead of the match at the 26 Mars Stadium in Bamako, coach Henry Kasperczak and key players expressed confidence and determination to secure a vital victory.
Speaking at a press conference following the Eagles’ training session, Kasperczak highlighted the team’s readiness for the encounter. “We must impose our game and control the match,” said the experienced coach, who returned to lead Mali after guiding the team to a fourth-place finish at the 2002 CAN tournament held in the country.
With the arrival of striker Moustapha Yatabaré boosting the squad, Kasperczak confirmed that the team is in good shape despite minor fitness concerns over defender Molla Wagué, who has since recovered. “We are ready and confident for this first match, which we must win at all costs,” he added.
Captain Seydou Keita, now plying his trade at AS Roma, echoed the optimism surrounding the team’s prospects. “We are confident against Malawi. It’s the toughest and most important match,” he said. “The key to success will be desire and determination.”
Striker Cheick Tidiane Diabaté, playing in front of the home crowd, expressed pride in representing his country on such an important occasion. “I am very proud and happy to be back in my country and in front of my fans, and I promise to score,” Diabaté told reporters. “It’s a great chance to play a match like this at home.”
The encounter kicks off at 7 p.m. (UTC) and is expected to draw passionate support from Malian fans eager to see their team start the campaign strongly on home soil.
