Afcon 2015 – IVORY COAST 1-1 MALI: GRADELL SAVES THE ELEPHANTS FROM EAGLES’ GRIP
Mali came within minutes of pulling off a major upset at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, but Max-Alain Gradel’s late equalizer rescued a point for Ivory Coast in this tense 1-1 draw on Matchday 2 of Group D.
Early Shock from Mali
The Eagles struck first, stunning the Ivorian defense in just the 7th minute. Mustapha Yatabaré began the move by switching play to his brother Sambou Yatabaré, whose pinpoint cross found Bakary Sako at the far post. The Wolverhampton winger met it with a thunderous left-footed volley, leaving keeper Gbohouo no chance.
From then on, Mali showcased their resilience and physical presence, frustrating the Ivorian attack throughout most of the match.
Gradel to the Rescue
Coach Hervé Renard’s tactical changes in the second half began to shift the momentum. Gradel, brought on with urgency, nearly assisted Wilfried Bony in the 51st minute, but the striker’s header went just wide.
The equalizer finally came in the 86th minute. Serge Aurier, pushing forward, delivered a low cut-back from the right. Gradel, unmarked at the edge of the box, fired a low left-footed shot that deflected slightly off Berthé and into the net.
A Tight Group
With all four teams in Group D drawing their first two games, the standings are now incredibly tight. Every nation has two points, and qualification will be decided on the final matchday.
