CAF to Decide on 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Host Amid Morocco Ebola Concerns

The host country for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) remains uncertain, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) prepares to issue a final decision on Monday regarding Morocco’s request to postpone the tournament over fears surrounding the Ebola outbreak.
Originally scheduled to host the continent’s most prestigious football tournament, Morocco has formally asked CAF to delay the event due to concerns over the health risks posed by the Ebola virus, which has severely impacted several West African nations.
CAF’s Executive Committee convened in Algiers on Sunday to consider Morocco’s request and is expected to continue discussions in Rabat on Monday with Moroccan government officials. According to the Algerian Press Service (APS), a final decision on whether the tournament will proceed as planned — and, if not, where it will be relocated — will be announced by CAF early this week.
“CAF will issue a statement on Monday on whether or not the CAN will take place, its date and in which country,” an official source told APS. The same source dismissed speculation that the tournament could be postponed until June, calling such reports unfounded.
The situation has sparked intense debate across the continent, with health concerns clashing with sporting commitments and logistical challenges. While Morocco remains adamant about postponing the event, CAF has so far indicated its intention to keep the tournament within the original January 17–February 8 timeframe.
If CAF decides to strip Morocco of hosting rights, it will need to find an alternative host nation on short notice — a daunting task given the scale of the competition and the tight timeline.
The decision is expected to be pivotal, not only for the organization of the tournament but also for broader discussions about health security and the responsibilities of host nations during global health emergencies.
Stay tuned for the official CAF announcement on Monday.
