Guinea Offers $50,000 Bonus to Players Ahead of Crucial AFCON Quarterfinal
As the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations enters its decisive knockout stage, national pride and financial incentives are aligning for Guinea’s Syli National.
Ahead of their highly anticipated quarterfinal clash against Ghana, the Guinean government has pledged a $50,000 bonus per player if the team qualifies for the semi-finals — a move aimed at boosting morale and galvanizing the squad.
This new bonus comes in addition to the $30,000 already awarded to each player for reaching the quarterfinals. Should Guinea make it all the way to the final, players stand to earn another $70,000, bringing the total potential bonus to $150,000 per player for the tournament.
Michel Dussuyer’s men, who reached the quarterfinals after a dramatic draw-lot decision over Mali, are now highly motivated — not only by glory but also by meaningful government support. Guinea will look to turn that motivation into victory as they take on a familiar opponent in Ghana, whom they faced twice in the group stage of qualifying.
