AFCON 2015: Group C Set for Thrilling Finale as All Four Teams Remain in Contention
After two pulsating rounds of action in Group C, the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations has delivered one of its most tightly contested groups, with all four teams still in with a chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
Ghana Bounce Back, Algeria Slip
The Black Stars of Ghana have revived their hopes thanks to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Algeria. Just days after their last-minute heartbreak against Senegal, Avram Grant’s men turned the tables, securing a stoppage-time winner courtesy of captain Asamoah Gyan — making his return after a malaria scare.
In a match that defied expectations, Ghana and Algeria produced a cautious tactical affair rather than the open, attacking contest many anticipated. The breakthrough came late, with a long ball from the Ghanaian backline unlocking the Fennecs’ defence. Gyan made no mistake, slotting home in the 93rd minute.
The win moves Ghana level on points with Algeria (3 each), setting up a decisive final day. Ghana will face South Africa, knowing a win should see them through. Algeria, meanwhile, must beat Senegal to guarantee progression — a draw could leave them vulnerable if Ghana wins.
Senegal in Control, But Not Safe
Senegal top the group with four points after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against a spirited South African side. Despite fielding an attacking lineup featuring Sadio Mané, Moussa Sow, and Mame Biram Diouf, the Lions of Teranga struggled for fluency. They fell behind early in the second half to a goal from Oupa Manyisa before Serigne Kara Mbodji headed in the equaliser.
Alain Giresse’s side remain in pole position but will need at least a point in their final match against Algeria to be certain of reaching the quarter-finals.
South Africa Still Alive — Just
Bafana Bafana, despite having just one point, are not mathematically out of the race. Shakes Mashaba’s team impressed in spells against Senegal and led before being pegged back. However, they will need nothing less than victory against Ghana in their final match — and must hope other results go their way.
Group C Standings (After Matchday 2):
-
Senegal – 4 pts
-
Algeria – 3 pts
-
Ghana – 3 pts
-
South Africa – 1 pt
All eyes now turn to 27 January, when the final group fixtures — Senegal vs Algeria and Ghana vs South Africa — will determine who stays and who goes home.
