Ghana’s Amartey Recognised for Fair Play as Black Stars Bounce Back
It was a night of redemption and recognition for the Black Stars of Ghana at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Following their dramatic 1-0 win over Algeria — courtesy of a stoppage-time strike from captain Asamoah Gyan — another Ghanaian was honoured for his contribution on the pitch.
Midfielder Daniel Amartey, who plays for FC Copenhagen, was awarded the Fair Play prize by tournament organisers for his exemplary conduct during the match. The 20-year-old put in a disciplined and composed performance, helping to anchor Ghana’s midfield in a tightly contested Group C encounter.
Before the match, Amartey had spoken with conviction about Ghana’s need to respond after their opening defeat to Senegal. “There is no room for mistakes now,” he said. “Against Algeria, we must win to keep our hopes alive.”
And win they did. Gyan’s last-gasp goal delivered a crucial three points that puts Ghana back in contention for a place in the quarter-finals. The victory, combined with individual honours for both Gyan (Man of the Match) and Amartey (Fair Play), marked a morale-boosting evening for Avram Grant’s side.
With renewed confidence, the Black Stars now look ahead to their final Group C clash against South Africa on 27 January — a match that could seal their progression into the knockout stages.
