Gyan Strikes Late as Ghana Stun Algeria to Revive AFCON Hopes
Ghana reignited their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Algeria, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from captain Asamoah Gyan in Group C.
In a match defined by tactical discipline and few clear chances, it was Gyan who provided the decisive moment just as the final whistle loomed. The striker latched onto a long ball over the top, outpaced his marker, and slotted home a clinical cross-shot past Algerian goalkeeper Raïs M’Bolhi to seal three vital points for the Black Stars.
The win lifts Ghana level with Algeria on three points, keeping their quarter-final hopes alive heading into the final round of group matches.
Speaking after the game, Ghana head coach Avram Grant praised both the timing and quality of the goal.
“That’s why I love football—scoring such a beautiful goal in the last minute,” said the Israeli coach. “Against Senegal, it was us who suffered a last-minute goal, so I’m happy this time.”
Grant was also full of admiration for his captain, who returned to the starting line-up after recovering from illness.
“Gyan was so eager to start the tournament. He ran hard for 90 minutes and then in the 91st, he delivered. It’s great. We’re happy, but we go back to work tomorrow to prepare for the final match.”
Ghana now turn their focus to their decisive final group clash, while Algeria must regroup after seeing their momentum halted in the dying seconds.
