AFCON 2015: Tunisia Aim to Soar Past Zambia in Group B Clash
BBC Sport – Africa
23 January 2015
Tunisia head into their second Group B match of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations determined to register their first win, after being held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde in their opener.
Despite showing flashes of technical quality, the Carthage Eagles lacked a clinical edge in front of goal, allowing the Blue Sharks to snatch a late equaliser from the penalty spot.
Manager Georges Leekens, speaking ahead of Tunisia’s next test against Zambia, stressed the importance of focus and mental resilience in a group where all four teams are level on one point.
“We’ve focused our preparation on concentration, which can be decisive in matches like these, where the smallest details make the difference,” said Leekens.
The Belgian coach believes the clash with the Chipolopolo will be pivotal in the race for the quarter-finals:
“The match against Zambia will be decisive for qualification, as all teams in the group currently have equal chances.”
Tunisia will look to build on their overall dominance in the opening match, particularly in midfield, where they impressed with possession and movement. However, sharper finishing will be required against a physical and experienced Zambian side.
Zambia, champions in 2012, are known for their combination of power, pace, and technical skill. Tunisia will need to be wary of quick transitions and set-piece threats.
“We must put all our energy into this match because Zambia are a formidable opponent,” Leekens added. “They’ve got size, technique, and speed — and let’s not forget their track record.”
A victory would put Tunisia in a strong position to reach the knockout stages, something they failed to achieve in the 2013 tournament. For Zambia, a win would also significantly boost their qualification hopes, following a 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their first match.
Group B standings (after Matchday 1):
Tunisia – 1 pt
Cape Verde – 1 pt
Zambia – 1 pt
DR Congo – 1 pt
The next round of fixtures will be crucial in shaping the group, with Tunisia vs Zambia and DR Congo vs Cape Verde both scheduled for Friday, 23 January.
