AFCON 2015 – Tunisia on the Verge of Quarter-Finals After Dramatic Win Over Zambia
Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles are perched at the top of Group B with four points after their 2-1 comeback victory over Zambia, thanks to a late winner from Yassine Chikhaoui. Despite being under heavy pressure throughout the match, goalkeeper Mathlouthi kept Tunisia in contention with a series of crucial saves. Now, ahead of their final group match against DR Congo on Monday, Tunisia is in control of its destiny.
Coach Georges Leekens, while optimistic, remains cautious:
“Tomorrow (Monday) will be a tough match. They [DR Congo] have to win, we want to win—it’s a different situation in our heads. But I have a group that is hungry. If we think we are in a favorable situation, we are making a mistake: we have to play the match to win it.”
Leekens praised his squad for their mentality:
“My players are not the best in the world, but they have fighting spirit, generosity, and a positive mindset. They never give up and believe until the final whistle. I’m ready to walk to Asia if that’s what it takes to qualify.”
Group B standings after two matches:
Tunisia – 4 pts
Cape Verde – 2 pts
DR Congo – 2 pts
Zambia – 1 pt
Qualification Scenarios:
Tunisia will qualify with a win or a draw against DR Congo.
A loss could still see them through depending on the outcome of Cape Verde vs Zambia.
With tension mounting, Monday’s matches promise high drama as all four teams remain mathematically alive.
