Georges Leekens Reacts to Tunisia’s 2015 AFCON Draw: “No Easy Teams, But Group Is Balanced”
Following Wednesday’s draw for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Malabo, Tunisia’s national team finds itself in Group B, alongside Zambia, Cape Verde, and DR Congo. Compared to the infamous “Group of Death” (Group C), this draw appears favorable for the Carthage Eagles—but head coach Georges Leekens remains cautious.
“There are no easy teams. It will not be easy and all the teams must be taken seriously,” Leekens warned.
The Belgian tactician, who guided Tunisia through a tough qualifying campaign, emphasized a focused approach:
“Tunisia will take the matches one by one. We managed to qualify even though we were in a difficult group, and we negotiated our matches well. We will do the same at the CAN.”
Tunisia’s first challenge will be a meaningful one—Cape Verde, the team that eliminated them from the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. That opener is set for January 18.
While Leekens admits Group B is balanced, he also acknowledges the high stakes:
“Zambia, Cape Verde, and DR Congo all have strong potential. We will need to study our opponents closely and prepare thoroughly.”
Still, the coach was frank in his comparison of the draw:
“This group is nevertheless balanced compared to Group C, which is the most difficult group made up of the big names in African football: Ghana, South Africa, Algeria, and Senegal.”
Tunisia will be looking to reassert itself on the continental stage, having last lifted the trophy in 2004. With a measured outlook and disciplined preparation, the Carthage Eagles are aiming to capitalize on what many see as a manageable draw.
