AFCON 2015 – Burkina Faso Promised Double Bonus to Push for Quarterfinal Spot
With Burkina Faso on the brink of elimination from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, the country’s authorities are pulling out all the stops to motivate the Stallions ahead of their crucial final Group A clash against Congo.
This Sunday, just hours before the match (scheduled for 6 p.m. GMT), the Burkinabe Minister of Sports personally visited the team at their hotel in Equatorial Guinea. According to Steven Lavon, Africa Top Sports’ special correspondent, the government is offering the players a double bonus should they qualify for the quarterfinals.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. Burkina Faso, finalists in 2013, have picked up just one point from their opening two games and haven’t scored in the tournament yet. Only a victory against Congo will give them a real chance of progressing to the knockout stage.
Despite the odds, the added financial incentive may serve as the extra push the Stallions need. The mission is difficult—but not impossible.
