AFCON 2015: Egypt Midfielder Al-Soulaya Eyes Redemption Against Senegal
By BBC Sport Africa | Cairo
After a dismal start to their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Egypt’s national team has reignited hopes of qualification — and midfielder Amr Al-Soulaya is urging the Pharaohs to stay focused as they prepare for a decisive clash against Senegal.
Egypt, who lost their opening two group matches to Senegal and Tunisia, bounced back with back-to-back wins over Botswana in the third and fourth rounds. The victories have not only earned the team six vital points but also restored belief within the squad.
“The recent victories against Botswana have helped us reposition ourselves in the group,” Al-Soulaya told Al-Ahram Hebdo. “We’re now third with six points, just one behind Senegal. Mathematically, our qualification is still possible.”
With Tunisia leading the group on 10 points, followed by Senegal on 7, Egypt finds itself in a high-stakes battle to secure one of the qualifying spots for the tournament in Morocco. The Pharaohs must now overcome the same Senegalese side that dealt them a 2-0 defeat on the opening day.
“The match against Senegal requires significant preparation and a different tactical approach,” Al-Soulaya added. “We are determined to win. We have no choice but to beat Senegal to stay in the race.”
That fixture, set for November 15 in Cairo, is shaping up to be one of the most crucial of the campaign. Al-Soulaya believes home advantage could prove decisive.
“Playing in Cairo, in front of our fans, will be a big boost. Their support can push us over the line.”
The Pharaohs have missed the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations — a shocking downturn for a nation that lifted the trophy three consecutive times between 2006 and 2010. The pressure is now on coach Shawky Gharib and his players to restore the team’s legacy.
For Egypt, the path to redemption runs through Senegal. And with spirits revived and stakes high, November 15 promises a fierce battle in Cairo.
