AFCON 2015 – Cape Verde: Ryan Mendes Remains Hopeful

Cape Verde’s Africa Cup of Nations Hopes Hang in Balance After Dull Draw with DR Congo

Cape Verde entered the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations as one of the continent’s emerging football powers, earning respect with a solid opening draw against Tunisia. However, their second group stage match against DR Congo ended in a goalless stalemate that left fans and players frustrated.

The Blue Sharks struggled to replicate their initial spark in a largely uninspiring game on Thursday. Despite some bright moments, they failed to convert chances and ultimately drew 0-0 with the Leopards in a match many described as lacklustre.

Speaking after the game, Cape Verde striker Ryan Mendes voiced his disappointment. “We’re a little frustrated because we had a very good first half. We should have scored, but we didn’t. And then in the second half, we had more chances to score, to win the match. We didn’t do it, once again,” the Lille forward told Canal+.

Mendes remains hopeful that Cape Verde can still turn their campaign around in their final group match against Zambia. “We still have a chance in the last match against Zambia. We’re going to rest well to attack well because we really want to go through,” he said.

He stressed the critical importance of finding the net, adding, “The only thing we’re missing is scoring, so we’re going to try to be efficient. If we score our goals, we can do great things. But if we keep playing like this and don’t score, I think we’ll go home!”

Cape Verde’s tournament journey thus far has highlighted both their potential and shortcomings. While their opening performance suggested promise, the inability to capitalise on opportunities against DR Congo underlines a key weakness that must be addressed.

With one game left in the group stage, the Blue Sharks face a must-win situation against Zambia if they are to advance to the knockout rounds. The team’s offensive efficiency will be under the spotlight as they strive to secure their first-ever progression beyond the group phase.

As Cape Verde prepares for their decisive fixture, the pressure mounts on their attackers to break the deadlock and inspire the team forward. Should they succeed, the Blue Sharks could continue their rise as one of African football’s exciting new contenders.
