AFCON 2015 – Algeria Aims to Break 25-Year Opening Match Curse
Algeria, one of the most formidable African sides today and a clear favorite for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, enters the competition with both ambition and caution. Despite being ranked the top African nation, the Fennecs have not lifted the continental trophy since 1990, and have notably failed to win their opening AFCON match for the past 25 years.
Their last first-match victory dates back to that triumphant 1990 edition, when Algeria beat Nigeria 5-1 in Algiers. Since then, the team has either faltered in the group stage or missed qualification altogether. Most recently, they were absent in 2012 and eliminated in the first round in 2013.
However, there is a renewed sense of optimism among Algerian supporters. Their impressive run at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16 and challenged eventual champions Germany, has lifted hopes. Under coach Christian Gourcuff, Algeria enters AFCON 2015 with a rejuvenated squad full of talent and balance.
The offensive line, in particular, is a major asset, led by Yacine Brahimi (FC Porto), Sofiane Feghouli (Valencia), and Islam Slimani (Sporting Lisbon). These players have matured into top performers for club and country, making Algeria a legitimate threat.
Their first test will come against South Africa on Monday, and the stakes are clear: win their opener and set the tone for a serious title run, or risk repeating history.
Kick-off: Algeria vs. South Africa – Monday, 7 p.m. GMT
Will the Fennecs finally put an end to their opening match curse? All eyes are on Mongomo.
