CAN 2015 – Group D Preview: Cameroon vs. Mali, A Test of Ambitions
Tonight in Malabo, Cameroon begins its quest for AFCON glory against Mali, in what promises to be a telling clash between two nations eager to prove their worth in Group D.
🦁 Cameroon: Rebuilding With Purpose
After missing the 2013 edition and suffering humiliation at the 2014 World Cup, the Indomitable Lions are back with a vengeance. Under Volker Finke, the team has undergone a transformation, with a new generation of players determined to restore pride to Cameroonian football.
Despite a shaky run of friendlies, Cameroon impressed in qualifying, topping a tough group ahead of Ivory Coast, DR Congo, and Sierra Leone. Much is expected from the attacking duo of Clinton Njie and Vincent Aboubakar, while Stéphane Mbia leads a now more united and disciplined squad.
“There’s a different mentality now… the locker room is united,” said Mbia ahead of the opener.
🦅 Mali: Quiet but Dangerous
Mali, meanwhile, had to fight until the last minute of the qualifiers to grab a spot in this tournament, edging through after a tense final matchday against Algeria. But under experienced coach Henri Kasperczak, and with the leadership of veteran Seydou Keita, the Eagles are always a tricky opponent.
Though not as star-studded as in previous years, this Mali side has a history of overachieving — including two third-place finishes in 2012 and 2013. The opening clash against Cameroon is a chance to reaffirm their credentials.
