AFCON 2015: Stéphane M’Bia Returns to Training but Will Miss Cameroon Opener
Malabo, Equatorial Guinea — Cameroon have received a boost ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations campaign, with midfielder Stéphane M’Bia returning to full training after a minor injury scare.
The Sevilla midfielder had been sidelined with a right leg injury and was under close observation by the Indomitable Lions’ medical staff. However, M’Bia joined the rest of the squad in Tuesday’s training session, easing concerns over his fitness.
Although he has returned to training, the 28-year-old will miss Cameroon’s opening match against Mali due to suspension. His availability for the remaining group stage fixtures will be crucial for coach Volker Finke’s plans, as the experienced midfielder is considered one of the team’s key leaders.
M’Bia’s presence in midfield has often provided Cameroon with much-needed balance between defence and attack. His recovery will be closely monitored as the Lions prepare for a challenging Group D campaign that also includes Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea.
Cameroon kick off their tournament against Mali in Malabo, with the match scheduled for Monday evening.
