Cameroon: Aurélien Chedjou Recalled for AFCON 2015
The coach of the Indomitable Lions, Volker Finke, has officially recalled Aurélien Chedjou to the Cameroonian national team ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Equatorial Guinea from January 17 to February 8.
According to linoindomptable.com, the Besiktas defender’s recall comes after pressure from Joseph Owona, president of the normalization committee, who decided to lift the suspension imposed on Chedjou following allegations of misconduct (notably drinking) during the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Finke, who had long advocated for the defender’s return, now regains a crucial option in central defense. Chedjou, a key figure in Cameroon’s World Cup qualification, is expected to join the team’s training camp on January 6, one day after the rest of the squad.
His return is timely, especially as Stéphane Mbia is suspended for the Indomitable Lions’ opening match, following a red card in their last qualifier against Ivory Coast. Alongside Nicolas Nkoulou, Chedjou strengthens Cameroon’s defensive setup heading into a highly competitive tournament.
