AFCON 2015: Tunisia’s Anis Ben Hatira Withdraws with Injury – “It Breaks My Heart”
Tunisia have suffered another blow ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, as Anis Ben Hatira has officially withdrawn from the squad due to injury. The Hertha Berlin midfielder confirmed the news via his official Facebook page, citing a lingering foot problem that has not healed in time.
“The result of the medical test shows me that I must cancel my candidacy for the third time for the African Cup. It is a great disappointment and it breaks my heart not to be able to play,” Ben Hatira wrote.
The 26-year-old expressed deep regret at having to miss out yet again on representing Tunisia at AFCON — this marks the third time he has had to withdraw from the tournament due to injury or circumstance.
Just days earlier, Ben Hatira had publicly voiced hope that he would recover in time for the competition. In a heartfelt message, he dismissed speculation about his commitment to the national team and reiterated his desire to wear the Tunisian jersey.
“All those who know me, know that my dream is to play for my country, and that I really care about this tournament — especially after having to give up twice. I want to play for Tunisia and I hope, Insha’Allah, to be part of it. I will do everything possible to be in playing shape as quickly as possible.”
Unfortunately, this dream will remain unfulfilled once again.
Ben Hatira becomes the second Tunisian player to withdraw from the squad ahead of the 2015 tournament, following Alaeddine Yahia, who opted out to focus on his club career.
The Carthage Eagles, led by Belgian coach Georges Leekens, began their pre-AFCON training camp on Friday in Monastir, with preparations including a friendly fixture scheduled for January 7. Tunisia are placed in Group B, alongside Zambia, Cape Verde, and DR Congo — a group considered highly competitive.
Ben Hatira’s absence will be felt, particularly given his creative spark and European experience. As Tunisia push forward in their preparations, coach Leekens will now need to consider alternative options to fill the void left by the Berlin-based midfielder.
For Ben Hatira, the setback is another painful chapter in his international career — a reminder of how fleeting opportunities can be, even for the most passionate players.
