2015 AFCON – Ghana’s André Ayew: “We’re Focused on the Semi-Final, Not the Title”
As Ghana prepares to face host nation Equatorial Guinea in the semi-finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, André Ayew has delivered a clear message: the Black Stars are focused and grounded.
Having emerged from the tournament’s so-called “group of death”, with crucial wins over Algeria (1-0) and South Africa (2-1), followed by a confident 3-0 victory over Guinea in the quarter-finals, Ghana now stands one step away from the final.
But Ayew isn’t letting any talk of titles distract his team:
🗣️ “We’re not thinking about the title. We’re only thinking about the semi-final. It will be a very difficult match. We’re playing against the host country, who have shown some good things.”
Ayew acknowledged the spirit of the Nzalang Nacional, who surprised many by reaching the semis. Despite controversy surrounding their quarter-final win over Tunisia, aided by a disputed penalty decision, Ayew insists Ghana remains unfazed:
🗣️ “They have good players but there’s also euphoria, everyone is behind them and that transcends them. It’s up to us to be focused and try to impose our game.”
🗣️ “We don’t think about all that (refereeing). All we care about is the pitch. We hope everything goes well with the referees. We have no fears.”
