AFCON 2015 – Group C: André Ayew Stays Positive Despite Ghana’s Defeat
Ghana’s campaign at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations began on a sour note as the Black Stars were defeated 2-1 by Senegal, despite an early lead from a penalty by André Ayew.
Ayew, who captained the side in the absence of Asamoah Gyan, reflected on the loss with a mix of disappointment and optimism:
“We showed great spirit, we mustn’t give up. Of course, I’m disappointed with the defeat, but I know we have good players and we can play good matches. If Atsu scores his two clear chances, it’s 3-0 and it’s not the same match. Today Senegal had that little bit of luck in the second half that we lacked.”
Ayew also highlighted the impact of Gyan’s absence:
“Gyan is a very important player for us, he’s a leader, our captain. He wasn’t there, and those who were there managed to do a good job.”
Despite the setback, Ghana still has two crucial matches to play in Group C against Algeria and South Africa. With strong individual performances and the return of Gyan potentially on the horizon, the Black Stars remain in the race for a quarterfinal spot.
