Senegal Parts Ways with Alain Giresse After AFCON Exit
At a press conference held on Wednesday at the Sofitel Hotel in Malabo, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) officially confirmed the end of its collaboration with Alain Giresse, following the national team’s elimination from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
End of the Road for Giresse
FSF President Me Augustin Senghor was clear:
“We have ended our relationship with Alain Giresse. He accepted it. Even though there was a two-and-a-half-year contract that bound us.”
The target set for Giresse was a minimum qualification for the quarter-finals, which was not achieved after Senegal’s 2-0 loss to Algeria.
🛫 Players to Return via Dakar — Giresse Heads to France
While the majority of players have agreed to return via Dakar as a sign of respect and unity with their fans, the now-former coach Giresse has chosen to fly directly to France.
“He wanted to go to France from Malabo. So, he will not go through Dakar. He promises to return later,” stated Senghor.
🧭 What’s Next?
Senghor emphasized that the search for a new head coach is already underway:
“Senegal, facing the upcoming deadlines, cannot remain without a coach.”
The FSF is expected to announce a new appointment soon to prepare for future competitions, including AFCON 2017 qualifiers and the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
