AFC to launch three-tier Asian Nations League in 2030

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has officially confirmed plans to introduce its own Nations League from 2030, adopting a format already established in Europe by UEFA.

The competition will bring Asia’s national teams together across three separate leagues, with promotion and relegation operating between them. The aim is to provide emerging nations with regular competitive fixtures while giving greater structure and purpose to the international calendar in the region.

The tournament will have consequences beyond the matches themselves. Results achieved in the different leagues will provide direct qualification places and decisive play-off opportunities for both the World Cup and the Asian Cup.

That means international windows will carry added significance from the group stage onwards, rather than serving primarily as a series of friendly matches.

By arranging fixtures between teams of a similar level, the AFC hopes to narrow the gap between Asia’s established powers and developing sides. The reform is intended to raise standards across Asian football while also creating major new television revenues for the confederation.
