Aden McCarthy scored his first UEFA Champions League goal, but Sabah were beaten 2-1 at home by Borussia Dortmund in Baku.
The former Kaizer Chiefs defender cancelled out Serhou Guirassy’s early opener, heading Sabah level six minutes before half-time.
Guirassy restored Dortmund’s advantage eight minutes after the restart, scoring in the 53rd minute to give the German side all three points.
The Guinea forward had earlier put Dortmund ahead in the 10th minute, finishing the visitors’ strong start to the match.
McCarthy’s equaliser came on his third appearance in Europe’s leading club competition. The centre-back rose highest to meet the delivery and give the Azerbaijani champions renewed hope before the interval.
He also produced an important defensive intervention later in the match, blocking Guirassy’s attempt to prevent the striker from completing a hat-trick.
Sabah were unable to find another response, however, and Dortmund held on to secure victory in the Azerbaijani capital.
In Tuesday’s other early kick-off, Fenerbahce surrendered a two-goal lead as Slavia Prague fought back to draw 2-2.
Pavel Kacor scored late for Slavia Prague to complete the recovery and earn the visitors a share of the points.
