He then turned provider, setting up Antoine Griezmann to drill home Atleti’s fourth, and Thiago Almada effectively killed the tie with the fifth, sending Diego Simeone’s side comfortably through to the semi-finals with a real statement of intent in the competition.
Lookman’s explosive performance comes barely 72 hours after completing a move from Atalanta in a deal worth around 40 million euros, underlining why Atletico were so keen to bring him in.
The 28-year-old was substituted in the 78th minute to a warm reception, having already done the damage and shown flashes of the direct running and end product that made him a star in Serie A.
He is now expected to feature again when Atletico Madrid return to La Liga action against Real Betis on Sunday, February 8th, as fans look forward to seeing more of their exciting new signing.
