Ademola Lookman: Atletico Madrid stood firm under Spurs pressure to reach quarterfinals
Ademola Lookman believes Atlético Madrid showed resilience to withstand heavy pressure from Tottenham Hotspur and secure a place in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, despite defeat in London.
Atletico progressed 7-5 on aggregate after a dramatic second leg in which Spurs pushed relentlessly for a comeback. A stoppage-time penalty converted by Xavi Simons handed the hosts victory on the night, but it proved insufficient to overturn the deficit created in the first leg.
The Spanish side’s commanding five-goal advantage from the opening encounter ultimately defined the tie, allowing Diego Simeone’s men to absorb sustained pressure and navigate a tense finish at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Spurs dominated large spells and struck first, igniting belief among the home supporters, yet Atletico’s composure under duress ensured their passage.
Lookman, reflecting on the contest, emphasised the mental strength required to survive such moments in elite European competition.
“We’re very happy to be into the next round. Every game is hard, and everyone knows the quality in this competition.
“The five goals in the first leg have taken us through, and there are positives to take tonight, so into the next round we go.
“Spurs scored first, and it would have been easy to collapse, but we had the mentality to stay calm, stay in the game and get opportunities. It was nice to be back in London, I call it home.”
The forward’s remarks captured the balance of the tie: early dominance in Madrid followed by a stern examination of character in North London. Atletico’s ability to manage the game, slow momentum and remain defensively disciplined proved decisive against an increasingly urgent Spurs side.
Attention now turns to a heavyweight quarterfinal clash against FC Barcelona, setting up an all-Spanish encounter with significant stakes.
“Barcelona will be a special, special game against another tough opponent. We need to be ready for it and we’ll prepare in the right way. Let’s take it as it comes.”
