Algeria midfielder Adem Zorgane misses Union Saint-Gilloise clash amid transfer speculation

Adem Zorgane’s absence from Union Saint-Gilloise’s squad for their UEFA Champions League qualifier against Bodø/Glimt has fuelled fresh speculation over the Algeria international’s future, despite the club insisting the midfielder missed the match because of injury.

The Belgian side were held to a 3-3 draw by Norwegian opponents Bodø/Glimt in the first leg of the third qualifying round on Tuesday, only days after lifting the Belgian Super Cup.

However, the omission of Zorgane from the matchday squad quickly became one of the main talking points surrounding the fixture.

The midfielder was not included on the team sheet, prompting questions over whether a transfer could be on the horizon before the close of the summer transfer window.

The timing of his absence attracted particular attention given his recent involvement in Union Saint-Gilloise’s Super Cup triumph over Club Brugge.

Zorgane played the full match and successfully converted his penalty during the decisive shootout, underlining his importance to the team.

Following the match, Union Saint-Gilloise head coach David Hubert sought to clarify the situation, dismissing suggestions that the player’s absence was linked to transfer developments.

According to the coach, Zorgane was unavailable because of a knock sustained during the Super Cup victory over Club Brugge.

Although Hubert did not disclose the precise nature of the injury, his explanation indicated that the decision was based on fitness rather than any ongoing transfer negotiations.

Reports in the Belgian media have since suggested that the Algeria international is expected to recover in time for the second leg of the Champions League qualifier, offering encouragement to the club ahead of the decisive encounter.
