Adem Zorgane faces another chance to break into Algeria team

Adem Zorgane has another opportunity to establish himself in Algeria’s midfield, with the absence of several established players potentially opening the door for the 26 year old.

Zorgane has followed a career path similar to that of his teammate Hicham Boudaoui, who is 27. However, while Boudaoui has only won 36 caps, he has already featured at two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and a World Cup, starting two of those competitions.

Zorgane’s progress through Algeria’s youth teams was equally impressive. He was a regular from under 17 level through to the A’ national team before receiving his first senior call up from Djamel Belmadi in November 2019.

At the time, he was not yet 20 and was still playing for Paradou AC.

Since then, Zorgane has built considerable experience at club level, making almost 300 professional appearances. His career includes 180 matches in the Belgian first division, a Champions League campaign and domestic success with Union Royale Saint Gilloise, where he won both a cup and a championship.

His international career, however, has been far less consistent.

When Zorgane first entered the senior setup, Algeria’s midfield already included Adlène Guedioura, Sofiane Feghouli and Ismaël Bennacer. Boudaoui had also moved ahead of him in the pecking order.

Even after some of the experienced players left, Zorgane found himself behind another midfielder, Ramiz Zerrouki.

His first senior start came against Djibouti in 2021, and he made an immediate contribution by providing an assist for Saïd Benrahma.

He was also tested as a defensive midfielder against Ghana in January 2020, but ultimately spent the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on the bench as Belmadi opted for Belkebla and Bendebka.

Zorgane avoided Algeria’s failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, but another opportunity with the national team did not bring the breakthrough he needed. After starting in June, he was unable to turn that chance into a permanent place and was subsequently left out of the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

It was not until September 2024 that Vladimir Petkovic brought him back into the national team. Zorgane produced his first standout performance against Liberia, but he was unable to maintain that level and soon returned to a secondary role.

With Zerrouki sidelined until October 2025 because of injury, Zorgane appeared to have another opening. Instead, Himad Abdelli established himself in the meantime.

Abdelli is the same age as Zorgane but only made his Algeria debut in 2023. Despite his later arrival, he was preferred and went on to feature at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Zorgane could now have another chance under the Hemdani and Yahia duo. Zerrouki is sidelined, while Bennacer is also out of contention. Boudaoui, who has regularly struggled with injuries, is unavailable as well.

Within the current squad, Zorgane will compete directly with Abdelli for a midfield place. However, the two could also feature together depending on the system used.

The absence of the injured Nabil Bentaleb may further increase Zorgane’s chances, although the emergence of the young and energetic Adil Bourabaa could provide another challenge to his hopes of finally becoming a regular for Algeria.

For a player who has already accumulated extensive club experience, the question remains whether this latest opportunity will finally lead to a breakthrough at international level.
