Bedford Town have completed the signing of veteran left-back Adam Chicksen on a free transfer following his spell without a club, with the deal officially commencing on 06/12/2025. The 34-year-old defender joins the National League North side after leaving Notts County earlier in the year, and his contract with Bedford Town is currently recorded as running until an unspecified date.

The move ends a brief period in which Chicksen was unattached, having departed Notts County to become a free agent. Bedford Town have taken advantage of his status to add an experienced, left-footed defender capable of operating at left-back. No transfer fee was involved in the switch from his “Without Club” status, and no current market value is listed for the Zimbabwe and England dual national at the time of the move.

Chicksen arrives with extensive experience across the English pyramid. Born in Milton Keynes and standing at 1.73m, he first stepped up from Milton Keynes Dons’ youth ranks to the senior side in 2008, before going on to feature for a string of clubs including Brighton & Hove Albion, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers. He has also had multiple loan spells, turning out for Gillingham, Fleetwood Town and Leyton Orient, before a significant stint at Notts County.

His most recent contracted club was Notts County, whom he joined in 2020 from a previous period without a club. During his time there he returned briefly to Bedfordshire football on loan with Woking FC in the 2024–25 season, before heading back to Meadow Lane and subsequently leaving to become a free agent on 01/07/2025. That exit ultimately paved the way for Bedford Town to secure his services later in the 2025–26 campaign.

Chicksen’s career valuation peaked earlier in his Brighton period, when he was rated in the €100,000 bracket during consecutive assessments between 2014 and 2016. More recently, his estimated worth at Notts County was around €75,000 in late 2023 and mid‑2024, before dropping to €50,000 in mid‑2025 and then to zero when he became unattached. While his current move to Bedford Town is recorded with no fee and no stated market value, his long history in the English leagues underlines the level of experience the club are bringing into their squad.

Although Bedford Town are based in England, the transfer means Chicksen continues his career away from his home nation, representing the Zimbabwean side of his dual nationality by furthering the growing contingent of Zimbabwe-linked players earning their living in the English game. Having already played in the National League system with previous clubs, he now faces the challenge of helping Bedford Town compete in the National League North.

The defender’s journey from youth football at MK Dons U18 through League One, League Two and the non-league structure illustrates a career built on adaptability and persistence. As Bedford Town look to strengthen their squad depth and add leadership at the back, Chicksen’s arrival provides a seasoned option on the left side of defence. How long he remains at this level is not yet defined, but the move offers him another chapter in a career that has already taken in a wide range of English clubs and competitions, and gives Bedford Town a player with the background to make an immediate impact.
