Adam Akimey expressed his excitement after receiving his first call-up to the Benin national team for the November international break.
The 21-year-old striker currently plays for Helsingborgs IF in Sweden’s second division and joins a squad led by coach Gernot Rohr.
For Akimey, the selection represents the culmination of years of patience and dedication.
Speaking to Le Miroir TV following training on Wednesday, he described the experience as a dream come true.
“It’s a long-held dream to play for my country. I’m really very happy.
Everything is going very well. The environment is very professional,” he said.
Although he has lived in Sweden for several years, Akimey is adapting quickly to the dynamics of the Benin squad.
One early challenge involves communication, but his teammates have eased the transition, especially through English.
Akimey, who also speaks Portuguese, plans to learn French to fully integrate with the group.
“The players help me a lot, especially with communicating in English.
I’m also trying to learn French. I speak Portuguese, so we manage,” he explained.
Despite the adjustments, Akimey has already found his place within the team.
He has impressed with his motivation and determination to contribute to Benin’s success.
His arrival adds depth to the squad, offering fresh attacking options as the Cheetahs prepare for upcoming international fixtures.
The young striker is focused on giving his all for the national team and embracing the opportunity to represent Benin on the international stage.
Rohr’s decision to include Akimey highlights the coach’s intent to blend experienced players with emerging talent, ensuring the squad remains competitive and dynamic.
Akimey’s first call-up signals a new chapter in his career and promises exciting potential for both the player and the Benin national team as they prepare for their upcoming matches.
