Achraf Hakimi makes Ballon d’Or history with second top-15 finish

Achraf Hakimi has made history by becoming the first African defender to finish in the Ballon d’Or top 15 in two separate editions of the prestigious individual award.

The Paris Saint-Germain right-back placed 13th in the 2026 rankings, extending his record after finishing sixth in 2025, according to football statistics platform Stats Foot.

Although the Moroccan international dropped seven places compared to last year, his latest result underlines his continued recognition among the leading players in world football.

Hakimi enjoyed another successful campaign with PSG, winning four trophies, including Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League. He also helped Morocco reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hakimi continues to raise Africa’s profile

The 27-year-old’s achievement represents another milestone for African football, particularly for defenders, who have historically found it difficult to compete with attacking players in the Ballon d’Or rankings.

His sixth-place finish in 2025 was already a landmark achievement for Moroccan football. By securing another top-15 position in 2026, Hakimi has now established a unique record among African defenders.

His contributions at both ends of the pitch have helped make him a key figure for PSG and the Moroccan national team.

A historic achievement despite the drop

Hakimi’s 13th-place finish means he remains among the 15 highest-ranked players in the world for a second consecutive year.

While he missed out on a top-10 position this time, his consistent presence among the award’s leading contenders highlights his standing in the modern game.

With major club honours and further international experience under his belt, Hakimi continues to strengthen his reputation as one of Africa’s most accomplished defenders.
