Achraf Hakimi joins Eto’o in elite African Champions League record after PSG triumph

Achraf Hakimi has written his name deeper into Champions League history after helping Paris Saint-Germain to another European crown on Saturday night, drawing level with Samuel Eto’o among Africa’s most decorated players in the competition.

PSG were pushed all the way by Arsenal in a tense final at the Puskás Arena, with the French side ultimately prevailing on penalties to seal yet another continental triumph.

Hakimi delivered a composed performance at right-back and confidently converted his spot-kick in the shootout, securing what is now his third Champions League winner’s medal.

That achievement places the Moroccan international alongside Cameroon legend Eto’o, who lifted the trophy twice with Barcelona in 2006 and 2009 before completing his European treble with Inter Milan in 2010.

For Hakimi, the journey has been defined by consistency at the very top level. He first tasted Champions League glory with Real Madrid in 2018, before adding successive titles with PSG in consecutive campaigns.

“It is not easy to achieve the title twice in a row, but we did it,” Hakimi said, as per Ysscores.

He also praised the team’s unity under the current management, stressing the importance of collective discipline over individual talent.

He added: “I always repeat that the coach has the final say in the club. We follow him and trust him. From day one, he assured us that the team is more important than individuals.”

“We are very happy to have him with us. We have built not just a team, but a family.”
