Achraf Hakimi has expressed his ambitions after being named among the five finalists for the prestigious African Player of the Year award, often referred to as the African Ballon d’Or. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the shortlist on Monday, narrowing the field from 10 to five players ahead of the December 16 awards ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco.
The Moroccan international is joined on the list by Guinea’s prolific striker Serhou Guirassy, Nigerian standout Ademola Lookman, Ivorian AFCON winner Simon Adingra, and South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, a Yachine Trophy nominee.
Reflecting on his nomination during an interview with Brut, Hakimi expressed pride in the recognition, which he views as validation of his hard work.
“It’s a source of pride and satisfaction, especially knowing that the work I’ve been doing for a long time is being recognised with this nomination. It’s an important individual trophy, and I’m happy to be here,” said the Paris Saint-Germain right-back.
When asked about his aspirations for the award, Hakimi made his ambitions clear while remaining humble about the competition.
“I hope I can win it, but if I don’t, I’m happy to be here, and it motivates me to keep working,” he added.
Hakimi’s impressive achievements this year bolster his case for the accolade. From reaching the Champions League semi-finals with PSG to strong performances for Morocco’s national team, he has built a compelling résumé.
However, competition is fierce, with Guirassy and Lookman emerging as strong favourites following standout campaigns.
Morocco’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) may also dampen Hakimi’s chances.
The Atlas Lions suffered a round-of-16 defeat to South Africa, a result decided by penalties, leaving a blemish on what has otherwise been a remarkable year for the defender.
The CAF Awards ceremony in December will reveal whether Hakimi’s achievements are enough to see him crowned Africa’s finest player or if the honour will go to one of his talented rivals.
Regardless of the outcome, his nomination underscores his status as one of the continent’s top footballing talents.
