FIFA has issued a warning to Nigeria’s coach, Stephen Keshi, following a complaint filed by former Malawi coach Tom Saintfiet. Saintfiet accused Keshi of making racist comments during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers match between Nigeria and Malawi.
Keshi’s comments, where he referred to Saintfiet as “not an African” and suggested he should return to Belgium, were deemed inappropriate. While Keshi has escaped immediate sanctions, FIFA has cautioned him. A FIFA spokesperson stated that if such incidents occur again, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee would have no choice but to impose sanctions on Keshi.
Despite the warning, Keshi can now focus on preparing for Nigeria’s first leg of the play-off match against Ethiopia without immediate repercussions.
