Michael Essien Attracts Interest from Olympiacos Amid Form Concerns
Despite recent struggles on the pitch, Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien remains a sought-after figure in European football, with Olympiacos Piraeus reportedly expressing interest in securing his services.
The former Chelsea star, who is currently contracted to AC Milan until June 2015, has already attracted attention from Turkish side Besiktas. Now, according to reports from Foot365mercato, Olympiacos scouts Christian Karembeu and Pierre Issa have been actively monitoring the midfielder’s situation, signalling the Greek club’s intention to make a move.
Essien’s form in recent seasons has been inconsistent, partly due to injuries, yet his reputation and experience continue to make him an appealing target for clubs looking to strengthen their midfield options.
Negotiations, however, may not be straightforward. Sources close to Essien suggest that while the player is open to a potential transfer, salary adjustments would likely be necessary to facilitate any deal with Olympiacos. The Ghanaian midfielder is understood to be willing to make financial compromises to secure regular playing time and revive his career.
AC Milan, who signed Essien in 2013, have yet to comment on his future. With his contract running until mid-2015, the Italian club may be open to offers that would allow them to offload a player who has struggled to recapture his peak form.
Olympiacos, perennial Greek champions and regular participants in European competition, would represent an opportunity for Essien to re-establish himself at a club competing for domestic honours and continental exposure.
As the summer transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Olympiacos or other interested clubs like Besiktas can capitalise on Essien’s availability to strengthen their squads.
