AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca has called on Samuel Chukwueze to enhance his defensive abilities, despite the Nigerian winger’s growing role in the team this season.
While Chukwueze has earned more playing time, Fonseca has pointed out areas of his game that still need improvement, particularly in defense.
In a pre-match interview, Fonseca emphasized the importance of a well-rounded game for his attacking players, urging Chukwueze to strengthen this aspect of his skill set.
Despite the positive progress Chukwueze has made since joining from Villarreal, Fonseca feels that his defensive contributions remain an area for development.
Musah will play. We have prepared well for this match, Fonseca said, referring to the upcoming game against Atalanta.
He also noted that US international Yunus Musah will be selected over Chukwueze for this fixture, highlighting Musah’s defensive strengths.
Fonseca continued to praise Chukwueze for his successful adaptation to Milan’s system, recognizing the winger’s positive attitude and commitment.
However, he acknowledged that, compared to Musah, Chukwueze still lacks the same defensive solidity.
Atalanta is a tactical team, and they are very strong both offensively and defensively,” Fonseca stated. “We need to be at our best in both areas to challenge them effectively.”
Chukwueze’s attacking prowess has undoubtedly been an asset to AC Milan, but Fonseca’s comments suggest that improving his defensive game is essential for him to retain his starting position in the future.
With Musah stepping into the lineup for the match against Atalanta, the competition for places in Milan’s attack is intensifying, and Chukwueze will need to address his defensive shortcomings if he hopes to secure a consistent role in the team.
