With his contract at Vipers SC set to expire in June, Ugandan midfielder Abdul Karim Watambala has spoken about his future, leaving the door open for both a potential extension with the club and a move to Europe.

The 25-year-old admitted that his next career move remains undecided but will be clarified once the season concludes.

While a European switch is an attractive option, he remains committed to giving his all for Vipers SC in the ongoing campaign.

Focused on success before making a decision

“Anything can happen in football, but for me, everything will be settled after the end of the season,” Watambala stated. “For now, I am focused on having a good end to the season with titles in the Uganda Premier League and the Uganda Cup.”

He emphasized his loyalty to Vipers SC but acknowledged that a move abroad could be on the horizon.

“If an incredible offer from Europe comes along, my team will find a solution. But for me, the Vipers have been my home for a very long time, and they will always be my first consideration. Let’s see what happens, but renewing my contract here wouldn’t be a problem.”

A key figure for Vipers SC

Watambala has been a crucial part of Vipers SC since joining the senior team in 2019, having risen through the club’s youth ranks.

Over the years, he has made 167 appearances across domestic and continental competitions, scoring 17 goals and providing 22 assists.

His contributions have been instrumental in Vipers’ recent dominance, helping the club secure three Uganda Premier League titles and two Uganda Cups.

He also played a key role in their historic qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage in 2023.

International experience and future prospects

Beyond club football, Watambala has also represented Uganda on the international stage.

He has earned 13 caps for the senior national team, the Cranes, and previously featured at youth levels, including the U17, U20, and U23 squads.

With his contract winding down, his performances in the final stretch of the season could be crucial in determining his next step.

Whether he remains at Vipers SC or secures a move to Europe, Watambala’s future is set to be a major talking point in the coming months.
