Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré has expressed his appreciation for the level of support Muslim players receive in England during Ramadan, contrasting it with his experiences in France.
Speaking to a group of schoolchildren at a Show Racism the Red Card event, the Senegal international shared insights into how Premier League clubs accommodate players who observe fasting during the Islamic holy month.
“If you observe Ramadan, we will help you”
Reflecting on his time at Everton, Doucouré described the club’s dedication to ensuring its Muslim players can perform at their best while maintaining their religious practices.
“It’s incredible, incredible,” he said. “We had everything we wanted. Tom would get up at 4 a.m. to cook for us.”
The Tom he refers to is Tom Kenton, Everton’s head chef since 2017 and former head of nutrition for the England national team. Kenton ensures that fasting players receive the necessary nourishment before sunrise.
“We have to eat before sunrise, so the chef wakes up and makes breakfast—eggs, pancakes, orange juice,” Doucouré explained. “Then we go back to sleep because we have to rest.”
A stark contrast to France
Doucouré, who moved to England in 2016 when he joined Watford from Rennes, noted that such support was absent during his time playing in France.
“I played in France, and this kind of thing never happened,” he said. “Here, the attitude is: if you observe Ramadan, we will help you. I’m very lucky to be in England for this. It’s very positive. As a Muslim, you feel comfortable.”
Doucouré’s words highlight the growing awareness and inclusivity in English football regarding religious and cultural diversity.
Uncertain future at Everton
The 32-year-old’s gratitude towards Everton comes at a time when his future at the club remains uncertain.
With his contract set to expire in June, it is unclear whether he will extend his stay or move on.
Regardless of where his career takes him next, Doucouré’s experience in England has left a lasting impression, serving as a testament to how the Premier League continues to set the standard for inclusivity in football.
