Abdelkarim Maamar Chaouche: Algerian-Swedish defender joins Gangwon FC on free transfer from MC Oran
Algerian-Swedish centre-back Abdelkarim Maamar Chaouche has joined K League 1 side Gangwon FC on a free transfer from MC Oran. The 29-year-old defender moves to South Korea after his contract with the Algerian club came to an end, strengthening Gangwons options at the heart of their back line.
Maamar Chaouche, a left-footed central defender standing at 1.80m, arrives with a market value of 350,000 and experience in both North African and European football. His switch to Gangwon FC, confirmed on 9 July 2026, marks his first move into Asian football.
The defender had been with MC Oran since 2024, having joined the Algerian Ligue 1 side from Swedish club Degerfors. During his time in Algeria he featured in the Coupe dAlgerie, starting in the competition and completing the majority of minutes in his appearance in the 2025-26 edition.
Before heading to North Africa, Maamar Chaouche built his career in Swedens league system. He progressed through Vasalunds youth ranks before spells at Eskilstuna City, Sollentuna FK, Norrby and AFC Eskilstuna, eventually earning a move to Degerfors in 2023. That sequence of clubs established him as a consistent presence in central defence and paved the way for his step into top-flight football abroad.
Able to operate as a specialist centre-back on his stronger left side, Maamar Chaouche adds balance and experience to Gangwon FCs defensive unit as they continue their K League 1 campaign. His free transfer from MC Oran is effective immediately following his registration with the South Korean club.
