Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal’s Stade Rennais future remains unresolved

Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal’s future at Stade Rennais remains uncertain, with talks over a contract extension still ongoing after several months of discussions.

According to Sky Sports, negotiations between the Morocco defender, his representatives and the club have yet to produce an agreement. No clear outcome has emerged, leaving the 20-year-old at an important stage of his career in Rennes.

No agreement on a new contract

Ait Boudlal is under contract with Stade Rennais until June 2028, so there is no immediate pressure for the club or player to reach a decision. However, Rennes must clarify its plans for one of its young defenders as questions continue to surround his long-term position at the club.

The discussions over a possible extension began last summer but remain unresolved. At present, there is no indication that the two sides are close to concluding the negotiations.

His situation is also being assessed through his role on the pitch. After returning from the international break, Ait Boudlal was named among the substitutes, meaning his place in the starting XI is not currently assured.

In September, Stade Rennais manager Franck Haise publicly highlighted some defensive errors made by the player during a news conference. Those remarks reflected the expectations placed on Ait Boudlal by the coaching staff, although there is no confirmed direct link between his playing time and the contract talks.

Fulham made two offers

The defender’s market value remains another significant factor in the situation. During the last summer transfer window, Fulham made two attempts to sign him from Stade Rennais.

The first proposal was worth 28 million euros, before the English club increased its offer to 35 million euros. Rennes rejected both bids and indicated that it would consider a departure only for 40 million euros.

The French club therefore made its valuation clear in response to Fulham’s interest. It remains to be seen whether the Premier League club will return with another approach in a future transfer window.

For now, Ait Boudlal’s position is shaped by three unresolved elements: the lack of progress on a contract extension, uncertainty over his regular involvement and the previous interest from Fulham.

No decision has been announced, but the coming months could prove important. Stade Rennais will have to determine whether it intends to build around the Morocco defender for the long term or consider alternative options.

Stade Rennais will soon play its second Europa League match against OFI Crete, offering another opportunity for Ait Boudlal’s role within the team to become clearer.
