Algerian coach Abdelhak Benchikha returns to lead Ittihad Tanger for new coaching spell

Abdelhak Benchikha has returned to manage Ittihad Tanger, with the Moroccan side confirming the Algerian coach’s appointment on a one-and-a-half-year contract.

The club announced the decision on Wednesday, marking the start of a new phase for the team following the dismissal of Spanish coach José Miguel Pérez.

Benchikha’s arrival signals a change in direction for the Tangier-based club as it looks to rebuild its sporting project under a coach already familiar with the team and the wider Moroccan football environment.

According to the club’s announcement, the Algerian manager will work alongside Serge Romano, who has been appointed as assistant coach.

Familiar face in Tangier

Benchikha is not new to the club or the city. The experienced coach previously worked with Ittihad Tanger between 2015 and 2017, a period that established a strong connection between him and the club’s supporters.

His return is therefore seen as a continuation of a relationship that began several years ago, with the club hoping his experience and knowledge of Moroccan football will help stabilise the team.

The decision also follows the departure of José Miguel Pérez, whose exit prompted the club’s management to search for a new figure capable of guiding the team through its next stage.

Extensive coaching experience in Morocco

Benchikha has built a long coaching career across North African football, particularly in Morocco where he has managed several clubs in the domestic league.

Among the teams he has coached are Raja Club Athletic, Difaa Hassani El Jadida, RS Berkane, Moghreb Tétouan, and Mouloudia Oujda.

His familiarity with the country’s football landscape is considered one of the reasons behind the club’s decision to bring him back to Tangier.

With his appointment now confirmed, Benchikha begins another chapter with Ittihad Tanger, aiming to guide the team over the next season and a half while reconnecting with a club he previously served.
