Algerian Football Federation (FAF) president Kheireddine Zetchi revealed on Thursday that Italy has expressed interest in arranging a friendly match with Algeria. Speaking in an interview, Zetchi highlighted the growing stature of the reigning African champions and the attention they are now attracting from top footballing nations.
“As reigning African champions, the Fences are highly sought after. Algeria has reached such a level and stature that several top nations want to play us in friendlies. The Italians are particularly keen to face us. But everything will depend on the World Cup draw. We have to wait until we know our group before considering friendly matches,” Zetchi explained.
He also emphasized the logistical challenges involved in scheduling friendlies, noting that there are limited FIFA international windows throughout the year. “It’s up to Djamel Belmadi to see and choose the right sparring partners for the national team,” Zetchi added, underlining the coach’s role in deciding which fixtures will best prepare the squad.
Algeria’s recent performances have reinforced their appeal on the international stage. Last October, Djamel Belmadi’s men secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Colombia in Lille, showcasing the team’s quality and strengthening their reputation among top-tier football nations.
With Italy reportedly interested in testing themselves against the African champions, Algeria could soon add another high-profile friendly to their schedule. However, the final arrangements will depend on the World Cup draw and careful planning to ensure the team is best prepared for major competitions.
