The 77th congress of the International Association of Sports Press (AIPS) concluded in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on Wednesday. This congress, coinciding with the 90th anniversary of the establishment of the global sports press body in Paris in 1924, focused on addressing the main challenges facing sports journalism.
Italian journalist Gianni Merlo, who has led the organization since 2006, highlighted one of these challenges as “the lack of realism among certain sports media specialists in fulfilling their role in the advancement of sports.”
The congress emphasized the importance of defending the profession of sports journalism and advocated for a renewed commitment to rigor in reporting, aiming to foster the growth of the field.
Additionally, the location of the next congress, the 78th, was announced to be Uruguay, specifically in its capital, Montevideo. The organizing committee pledged to ensure that the upcoming congress surpasses the achievements of the Baku event. The 77th congress in Baku witnessed a record attendance of representatives from 103 countries, with high-level discussions and efficient organization, including the involvement of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliev.
